Little Valley is a small locality in the hill country between Alexandra and the Maniototo, on the inland road that connects the Clutha Valley to the Maniototo plains through the Raggedy Range. The valley is exactly what the name suggests: a small, schist-sided basin with a creek running through it, farming land on the floor and tussock climbing the faces to the ridgeline, one of the hundreds of similar features in Central Otago that the early settlers named with the economy of people who had more geography than vocabulary.
The inland road through Little Valley is one of Central Otago's less-travelled back routes, connecting Alexandra to Patearoa and the Maniototo without the main highway circuit, and the people who use it tend to be the farming families who live along it and the occasional through-traveller who has discovered it on a map and prefers the schist faces to the highway. The quality of the tussock scenery is comparable to anything on the main road network; the traffic is not.
The permanent population is the farming families on the valley floor and surrounding runs, with Alexandra's services 20 minutes south and the Maniototo's services north over the range. The school run to Alexandra covers the educational requirements.
