Living in Gulf Harbour
Gulf Harbour sits at the far end of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, around 40 km north of the Auckland CBD by road and considerably less by water, which is rather the point. This is Auckland's marina suburb: around 9,000 people arranged around a large marina, canal-style waterfront homes, and a general understanding that the boat is not a luxury, it's the plan.
The suburb grew up around the Gulf Harbour Country Club golf course, grand enough to have hosted the 1998 World Cup of Golf, and the marina, which is one of the biggest in the country. The commuter ferry to downtown Auckland takes about 50 minutes and is, by a comfortable margin, the most civilised commute in the city: flat white, gulf views, no motorway.
The real treasure is at the very tip of the peninsula. Shakespear Regional Park is an open sanctuary behind a predator-proof fence, with beaches, lookouts and native birdlife that has properly rebounded. Kiwi at one end of the suburb, lattes at the other.
Gulf Harbour School covers the primary years, with Whangaparāoa College up the peninsula for secondary. Bring your mate out on the ferry, walk Shakespear, count the masts on the way home. They'll start checking property prices before the boat docks.
