Hedgehope is a Southland locality whose name either promises small spiny mammals or records a hedged enclosure on a hope - an Old English word for a small valley - depending on your etymological position, and the Southland flat makes the valley reading implausible enough that the hedgehog lobby gains credibility. Either way, the locality exists in the farming country southeast of Winton with the self-possession of a place that has been answering questions about its name for 150 years and has developed a calm procedure for it.

The farming around Hedgehope is the southern Southland plains model: dairy and sheep on the flat, reliable country that the district's soils and rainfall support between Winton and Invercargill. The locality has the productive, well-managed character of Southland farming country that has been in continuous operation for long enough to have worked out the drainage.

Hedgehope has its own school, which in the Southland rural district context means the community has held together sufficiently to justify the infrastructure, and the school reciprocates by being the reason families stay. Winton is the service centre, Invercargill the city, and the flat roads between them are all negotiable.
