It was named after Helen McLeod in the 1860s, became a key timber-milling town through the late 19th century, and was for decades the southern terminus of the Kaipara railway line. Population is around 2,500.

The Helensville township is essentially one long main road (Commercial Road and Garfield Road) with the standard country-town mix: a Four Square, the pub, the post shop, the local hardware, the antique shops that turn over slowly.
