Isla Bank is a Southland locality on the farming plains south of Winton, where the flat, productive country carries the dairy and sheep operations that the Southland interior runs at scale. The name has the Scottish character that Southland's early settlers imported wholesale, applying the Isla - a Scottish river and island name - to the bank, probably a river terrace or elevated piece of farmland in the otherwise relentlessly level plain.

The locality sits in the working agricultural country between Winton and Invercargill, in the corridor of flat farming that the Oreti River's catchment supports. Southland's agricultural plain here is as productive as it looks and looks about as productive as anything in the South Island: deep, improved soils, reliable rainfall, and the infrastructure of a district that has been dairying at scale for long enough to have refined the operation considerably.

Invercargill is 20 minutes south and Winton 20 minutes north, which makes Isla Bank the kind of locality where the residents have done the commute arithmetic twice and concluded that neither centre has a compelling claim. The farming makes the decision: the land is here, the work is here, and the cities are equidistant.
