Lynfield is a southwestern Auckland suburb about 9 km from the city centre, sitting between Blockhouse Bay, Mount Roskill, Hillsborough and the bush-lined Manukau Harbour coast at Waikowhai. It is a settled, leafy residential suburb, built up largely from the 1960s when this was the southern edge of the old Mount Roskill Borough. The area stayed part of that borough until 1989, when it was absorbed into Auckland City, and it still has the settled, established feel of that era.
The suburb is organised around Lynfield College, one of the larger secondary schools in Auckland with close to two thousand students, on White Swan Road. The school gives the suburb its name and much of its identity, and the surrounding streets of brick-and-tile family homes were built for exactly the households that fill its classrooms.
The other defining feature is the coast. The Waikowhai walkway threads along the northern shore of the Manukau Harbour at the suburb's edge, a surprising stretch of regenerating bush, cliffs and little bays a short walk from suburban streets. Everyday shopping sits along Hillsborough Road and at the centres of Blockhouse Bay and Mount Roskill nearby.
It is quiet, green and built for families, and it has never tried to be anything else.
