Living in Naseby
Naseby is a gold rush town that survived the gold by becoming exactly what a Central Otago village should be: small, confident about its identity, and sufficiently well-preserved that it functions as both a living community and a heritage experience without being confused about which is more important. Around 100 permanent residents occupy the stone and schist cottages of the Maniototo's most attractive small town, joined seasonally by the curling participants, the ice skaters and the mountain bikers who have discovered that Naseby's assets accumulate in both winter and summer.
The Royal Hotel and the Ancient Briton pub bookend the main street, and the curling rink has been delivering the stones-on-ice experience that Scotland exported and Naseby adopted with the fervour of a town that had the climate for it. The Naseby Forest's mountain bike trails are the summer offering, threading the planted pines and the old diggings country with the trail quality that has made the district nationally known in the cycling community.
The town's water tower, the Victorian church, the heritage streetscape and the damson gin that one local producer has turned into a Central Otago specialty combine to produce a village that the visitor guides describe enthusiastically and the residents take slightly for granted in the way of people who have always lived somewhere good.
Naseby Area School covers the local years. Ranfurly is 15 minutes east.
