Living in Ranfurly
Ranfurly is the Maniototo's capital, a town of around 900 people on the broad tussock plain that it calls home and that calls it back with the force of geography: everything in the Maniototo eventually reaches Ranfurly, and everything that needs to leave the Maniototo leaves from here. The art deco main street is the town's signature, a collection of 1930s facades that the Maniototo's distance from architectural fashion preserved through the decades in which every other New Zealand town was modernising, and that the design world eventually caught up with and declared significant.
The art deco didn't happen because Ranfurly was prosperous in the 1930s - the rebuild followed a fire that destroyed much of the town in 1898 - but the coherence of the rebuilding era's style and the subsequent absence of development pressure combined to produce a main street that the Maniototo now markets with appropriate pride.
The Otago Central Rail Trail ends at Ranfurly for those who reverse the Clyde-to-Middlemarch direction, making the town the western hub of the trail's Maniototo section and the service centre for the cycling population that the trail has sent through the plain since 2000. The trail's economic effect on the town has been real and acknowledged.
Ranfurly School and Ranfurly College serve the town and district. The Maniototo's version of rush hour involves agricultural vehicles.
