Ngakawau is a small community at the Ngakawau River mouth on the northern Buller coast, the point where the Buller coalfields' old rail network reached the sea and the coal hoppers loaded the ships that carried the West Coast's export tonnage north. The coal loading is long gone, but the settlement remains as one of the northern coastal communities that the highway threads through on the way to Karamea, and the Ngakawau River's gorge provides the dramatic entry to the Charming Creek Walkway, one of the West Coast's underrated heritage tracks.

The Charming Creek Walkway follows the old coalfield railway line up the Ngakawau gorge through beech forest, past waterfalls and over the viaducts that the mining era's engineers built with the confidence of people who knew the coal had to come out somehow. The full track takes four hours return, the gorge sections are spectacular, and the heritage infrastructure - the bridges, the cuttings, the tunnel - gives the walk a dimension that the landscape alone would not provide.

Ngakawau's small community has the coastal West Coast character of a settlement where the highway provides the connection and the scenery provides the reason to stay. Westport is 40 minutes south for the full service range.
