Living in Ngatea
Ngātea is a small town on the Hauraki Plains, sitting on the banks of the Piako River where State Highway 2 runs through, around 70 km southeast of Auckland and 18 km southwest of Thames. For the thousands of motorists heading to the Coromandel or the Bay of Plenty each summer, it is the natural place to stop, and the main street is built around exactly that.
The town owes its existence to drainage. The Hauraki Plains were once swamp, and in the early 1900s a network of canals and stopbanks drained the land into the rich dairy country it is today. Ngātea grew as the service centre for that farming community, and it still plays the role, hosting the Plains' main cluster of shops, cafes and services. The pace is rural-hub rather than commuter-town, and most of what passes through stops only for fuel, lunch or a quick walk through the gardens.
Ngatea School looks after local primary children, with older students travelling to Hauraki Plains College at Kerepehi nearby. The town has the practical line-up of a rural hub: a supermarket, the usual trades and farm suppliers, a medical centre, and the well-known Ngatea Water Gardens just out of town.
It is a town that exists to be useful, and it wears that lightly.
