North New Brighton runs along the dunes of eastern Christchurch, around 9 km from the central city, where the suburb's entire eastern boundary is a beach that continues, give or take a river mouth, most of the way to the horizon. Around 5,000 people live behind the marram grass here, in the modest seaside housing of a community that has always measured wealth in surf reports and westerly shelter rather than valuations.

The beach, locally North Beach, runs the daily liturgy: the surf club's flags and nippers in season, the dog walkers and the long-haul beach runners year-round, and the dawn light arriving over the Pacific without charge. Rāwhiti Domain spreads its playing fields and golf links behind the dunes, one of the east's great green allotments.

The practical kit recovered with the east: the Taiora QEII recreation centre's pools and gym sit five minutes west, New Brighton's pier, hot pools and Saturday market five minutes south, and the city a 20-minute drive.

Rāwhiti School anchors the local years, with the rebuilt Shirley Boys' and Avonside Girls' campus and the east's colleges within reach. North New Brighton's deal has never changed: the beach at the back gate, and a community that knows exactly what that's worth.
