Living in Parklands

Parklands is a northeastern Christchurch coastal suburb around 8 km from the central city, between Burwood and New Brighton. It was built almost entirely in the 1970s and 1980s as one of the city's planned residential extensions, with curved street layouts, large sections and a strong family character that has held through several decades.

Parklands took a real hit in the 2010 to 2011 earthquakes, with significant land damage from liquefaction and some streets red-zoned. Recovery has been steady. The Parklands Library on Queenspark Drive is the community anchor, alongside Fresh Choice Parklands and a small shopping cluster.

The standout local feature is the Parklands Marina Holiday Park, a sprawling campground that's been operating since the 1970s and draws summer holidaymakers from across the country. The Turf Restaurant on Queenspark Drive is part of the same One Good Horse hospitality group as the Avonhead Tavern, with a strong local following.

Most homes are 1970s and 1980s on flat streets, with newer builds replacing some of the earthquake-damaged stock. Parklands School and Queenspark School handle the primaries. Older students attend Shirley Boys' High, Avonside Girls' or Mairehau High. New Brighton Beach is a 10-minute walk away.
