Onehunga is on the northern shore of the Manukau Harbour, 8 km south of central Auckland, sitting in the shadow of Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill). It's been a working part of Auckland since the 1840s, originally as a port and then as a wool town. The original te reo name is Ōnehunga, and the small Port of Onehunga is still working today.

The suburb's biggest pulling power for visitors is Dress Smart on Arthur Street: New Zealand's first factory outlet centre, opened in October 1995, with around 100 brands at outlet prices. Locals view it as either a bargain Mecca or the Bermuda Triangle of clothing stores; both takes are valid.

Onehunga Bay Reserve is the other big story. The suburb lost its waterfront when the SH20 motorway went through in the 1970s, and finally got it back via a 6.8-hectare park completed in late 2015 (the Taumanu Reserve). Beach, lagoon (apparently with friendly stingrays), playground, skate ramp, pedestrian bridges over the motorway.

Onehunga has its own train line (electrified in 2014) and a steady food scene along Onehunga Mall. St Peter's Anglican (1848) is the oldest church.
