Living in Oneroa
Oneroa is the main village of Waiheke Island, about 17 km east of central Auckland by ferry across the Hauraki Gulf. The Fullers Ferry from downtown Auckland takes around 40 minutes and runs frequently through the day. Once you're off the ferry, the island runs on its own rhythm.
Oneroa sits on a ridge above the long sandy Oneroa Beach. The village strip along Ocean View Road has most of the island's bars, cafés, restaurants and boutiques: small, characterful, mostly locally-owned. The Oneroa Beach Reserve and Waiheke Library are at the heart of the village.
Waiheke is the country's most accessible wine region. Mudbrick Vineyard on Church Bay Road is the famous one, with its wedding-perfect Mediterranean architecture and views over the inner Hauraki Gulf. Cable Bay, Te Whau, Stonyridge and Kennedy Point all run along the western half of the island, all open for tastings. The vineyards opened Waiheke up as a serious destination in the 1990s.
Waiheke High School handles the secondary kids. Most residents commute on the ferry to Auckland for work or work in tourism. Around 9,000 permanent residents, several times more in summer. Property prices have taken the kind of journey you'd expect from "40 minutes from downtown by ferry".
