Randwick Park sits in southeast Manurewa, around 28 km from the Auckland CBD, and it owns one of the best community stories in the country. A 1970s and 80s suburb of around 7,000 people that the city's attention had largely skipped decided, through sheer organised stubbornness, to build its own future: residents drove the creation of their own skate park, then the Manu Tukutuku community centre, and in 2017 Randwick Park was named New Zealand Community of the Year. That machinery still runs the place. Manu Tukutuku on Riverton Drive hosts the programmes, the events and the everyday business of a suburb that learned how much it could do for itself, and the parks and walkways stitched through the housing carry the daily foot traffic of a young, proudly Māori and Pasifika community.

Alfriston College, one of South Auckland's newer secondary schools, sits within the suburb, with Randwick Park School covering the primary years, a rare full local education for a suburb this size.

The Southern Motorway and Manurewa's shops are minutes away. Randwick Park's lesson is simple and earned: nobody was coming, so the locals did it themselves. Then they collected the trophy.
