Redcliffs sits where the Avon Heathcote Estuary meets the sea road to Sumner, around 9 km from central Christchurch, beneath the rust-coloured volcanic cliffs that named it. Around 5,000 people live in this seaside-village arrangement, on flat streets between the water and the rock, in a suburb that has always behaved more like a small coastal town that happens to hold a city address.

The water runs the day: the estuary's tidal sheet hosts the kayakers, paddleboarders and godwits in their seasons, the causeway path carries the walking and cycling traffic toward the city with the tide alongside, and Sumner's surf waits three minutes east when the salt needs waves attached.

The village centre on the main road keeps the local economy human-scaled, cafes, dairy, the essentials, while Barnett Park's valley behind offers playing fields and a walking track into the cave-pocked hills. Redcliffs School, rebuilt on its new Barnett Park site in 2020 after the earthquakes forced the move, anchors the community with fresh facilities and the same old loyalty.

Mount Pleasant rises one side, Sumner waits on the other, Ferrymead's retail sits five minutes west. Redcliffs is Christchurch's estuary village: red rock behind, silver water in front, and the city visiting on weekends.
