Sumner is a beach suburb 12 km southeast of central Christchurch, where the Avon-Heathcote Estuary meets the Pacific Ocean. The standout landmark is Cave Rock (Tuawera): a sea-eroded volcanic outcrop sitting on the beach itself, climbable, photographable and the unofficial mascot of the suburb. At low tide a cave runs through to the other side.

The Esplanade along the beachfront is where Sumner does its weekend best: cafés, fish and chips, ice cream, surfboard rentals, the lifeboat station (the country's oldest, established 1898) and a steady flow of dog walkers. The beach itself is a long stretch of sand backed by the cliffs, with surf at the eastern end and calmer flats at the estuary mouth.

Sumner took serious damage in the 2010 to 2011 earthquakes and rockfalls from Scarborough Hill made parts of the suburb temporarily unusable. The recovery has been slow but steady, and the community held together through it.

Up the hill, Scarborough has the best views over the city and the Pacific. Past Sumner are Taylor's Mistake (a great surf beach with baches built into the cliffs), Godley Head and the Banks Peninsula coast. Bus 3 runs frequently from the city.
