Silverdale is the spot most of the Hibiscus Coast funnels through without quite stopping. It sits at the top of the Northern Motorway about 30 km north of the city, where the road to Orewa, the road out to Whangaparāoa and the new subdivisions all meet, and over the last decade it has gone from a quiet village to one of Auckland's busiest growth fronts.

There are really two Silverdales. One is the original settlement, called Wade until 1910, which still keeps a heritage main street and the Silverdale Pioneer Village run by the local historical society. The other is the sprawling retail and housing zone that has grown up beside the motorway, anchored by a large shopping centre with a supermarket and the big-box stores, and ringed by new neighbourhoods pushing out across the old farmland.

The area is one of the fastest-growing in the country, with tens of thousands more residents and homes forecast over the coming decades. Schooling, shops and services are racing to keep up, mostly successfully. For families it has become a one-stop hub for the whole northern coast.

It is a town caught mid-transformation, half pioneer village and half construction site, and for now it wears both at once.
