Stokes Valley is a Lower Hutt suburb on the northeastern hills, about 12 km from central Lower Hutt. It's a long, narrow valley running north from Pomare, accessed via a single road that becomes Stokes Valley Road as it climbs through the suburb.
Population is around 9,300, settled steadily from the 1950s onwards as Lower Hutt expanded into the surrounding valleys. The suburb has a strong family character: large sections by Wellington standards, big yards, the kind of trees that need pruning twice a year. Most homes were built between 1955 and 1980.
The Stokes Valley Shopping Centre on Manuka Street has a Four Square, the takeaways, the medical centre, the pharmacy and the standard suburban mix. Stokes Valley Library is the community anchor. Stokes Valley School, Tawhai School and Koraunui School handle the primaries. Hutt Valley High in central Lower Hutt takes the older kids.
