Living in Naenae

Naenae is a Lower Hutt suburb around 4 km northeast of the Hutt city centre, and one of the most deliberately planned places in the country. It was laid out in the 1940s as a model state-housing community, with European modernist Ernst Plischke involved in the civic design, and Hillary Court at its centre as one of New Zealand's earliest pedestrian shopping precincts. The ideals were high. The execution, over the decades, was patchier. The community stayed strong regardless.

Around 8,000 people live here, in the original state-built homes plus later private housing, with a strong Maori and Pasifika presence and deep multi-generational roots.

The big recent story is the pool. The Naenae Olympic Pool closed in 2019 over earthquake concerns, taking the suburb's social anchor and much of Hillary Court's foot traffic with it. Its $68 million replacement, Te Ngaengae Pool and Fitness, opened in December 2024 with a 10-lane 50-metre pool and hydroslides, and Te Mako community centre opened in the restored old post office the same year. The heart is back in.
