Tītahi Bay is a coastal suburb of Porirua, on the west-facing shore about 4 km from the Porirua city centre and around 22 km north of central Wellington. It curls around a single kilometre-long beach that looks out to Mana Island and the open Tasman, which makes it one of the few Wellington-area suburbs facing the sunset rather than the harbour.
The beach is the whole point. A row of brightly painted boat sheds at each end has been photographed so often they have become the suburb's signature, and the consistent west-coast swell makes the bay a reliable surf break across most tides. Above the sand, the streets climb steep hills lined with houses from the 1950s and 1960s, many with sea views that would cost a great deal more a few kilometres south.
Tītahi Bay School looks after local primary-age children, with older students heading to Porirua College and the other Porirua secondary schools. The Four Square on Whitehouse Road covers everyday shopping, and the city's larger supermarkets and the train station are a short drive away in central Porirua.
It has the feel of a beach town that happens to sit twenty minutes from a capital city, and it is in no hurry to change that.
