It's named after Warkworth in Northumberland (England) and has been the main service centre for the Mahurangi region since the 1850s. Population is around 5,500 and growing fast: Warkworth has been one of Auckland's fastest-growing satellite towns since the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway opened in 2023.

The Warkworth town centre runs along Queen Street and Neville Street, with the heritage Warkworth Town Hall, antique shops, cafés, the Saturday farmers market on Wharf Street, and the Warkworth Cement Works heritage site (one of the country's earliest cement plants, now atmospheric ruins). Sheepworld a few km north is a working farm show, popular with bus tours.

The Mahurangi River runs through the centre, with the historic Warkworth wharf at the river's tidal head. Snells Beach is 8 km east, with the closest sandy beach to town. The wider Mahurangi Coast (Mahurangi East, Algies Bay, Sandspit, Matakana) is all within 15 minutes.
