Living in Wattle Downs
Wattle Downs occupies its own loop of peninsula on the Manukau Harbour at Manurewa's southern edge, around 30 km from the Auckland CBD, and it is built, with magnificent literal-mindedness, around a golf course. The Manukau Golf Club's fairways fill the peninsula's heart, the houses ring the course and the coastline, and the whole arrangement gives Wattle Downs the layout of a gated community that never bothered installing the gate.
Around 7,000 people live here, in solid housing from the 1980s onward, on quiet looping streets where through-traffic is geometrically impossible. There is one road in. The residents regard this as the suburb's finest feature, and the evening calm backs them up.
The coastal esplanade is the other half of the deal: a walking path tracing the peninsula's edge along the Manukau, with harbour views, big skies and a steady congregation of dog walkers who all know each other's dogs' names, if not each other's.
Reremoana School serves the local primary years, with most secondary students heading to James Cook High School or the Takanini schools nearby. The motorway is 10 minutes away, pretending otherwise. Wattle Downs is the quiet end of South Auckland's story, told at walking pace around a golf course. The herons approve.
