Living in Whenuapai
Whenuapai is best known for what flies out of it. The suburb, on the northwestern edge of the Waitematā about 15 km from the city, is home to RNZAF Base Auckland, the air force's main operational base, and for most of its life the suburb has been the village attached to the airfield rather than the other way around.
The name means good land, and the flat country around the base has been exactly that, first for market gardens and farms, now increasingly for housing. The base started taking shape in 1937 for Wellington bombers, merged with the old Hobsonville airfield in 1965, and remains busy with the air force's transport and patrol aircraft, so the sound of a Hercules overhead is part of life here.
The big change is the development pushing out from neighbouring Hobsonville. Whenuapai is now one of the faster-growing parts of Auckland, with new subdivisions filling the land north of the Upper Harbour Motorway and schooling and shops following. The motorway, finished in 2011, made the whole area properly commutable.
It is a suburb living next to a runway and a building site at once, which is a stranger combination than it sounds, and the locals barely notice either any more.
