Birkdale is a North Shore suburb between Birkenhead and Beach Haven, around 13 km northwest of the Auckland CBD across the Harbour Bridge. It developed as a postwar residential extension of Birkenhead through the 1950s and 1960s, on the western slopes of the peninsula. Mostly residential, mostly modest, mostly the kind of suburb that exists to be lived in rather than visited.

The Birkdale Shopping Centre on Birkdale Road has the local Four Square, takeaways, hairdresser, pharmacy and the standard suburban services. Most residents do their bigger shopping at Highbury in Birkenhead or Glenfield Mall. The Birkdale Beach Haven Community Project handles the community programming.

Birkdale Primary, Birkdale Intermediate and Birkdale North School are the local primaries, with Birkenhead College handling the secondary kids. Verrans Corner, on the southern edge, gets you onto the bus into the city.

Eskdale Reserve and Kauri Park cover the local bush walks, with native forest pockets that survived the postwar subdivision. The western slopes of the suburb get the late afternoon sun over the upper harbour, which is the kind of view residents tend to mention casually. Most homes are 1960s-era brick or weatherboard on quarter-acre sections, the classic North Shore template before the apartments arrived. Birkdale doesn't really have a tourist case.
