Glenfield is a residential and commercial suburb on Auckland's North Shore, around 10 km north of the CBD. It grew up in the 1960s and 1970s as the Harbour Bridge opened the Shore to serious commuting, and it has retained the unflinching practicality of that era ever since. Nobody has ever described Glenfield as charming. Nobody, including Glenfield residents, particularly minds.

Westfield Glenfield on Glenfield Road opened in 1976 as one of New Zealand's earliest enclosed shopping malls, and that's still its main job. Around 100 retailers, a food court, supermarkets, services. It's where the wider central North Shore goes for the genuinely unromantic shopping: school uniforms, replacement printer cartridges, a haircut.

Glenfield Pool & Leisure Centre on Bentley Avenue handles the local recreation. Marlborough Park covers cricket, football and rugby. The Auckland Council's North Shore service centre is in the town centre. Wairau Valley industrial precinct, on the suburb's southeastern edge, is where most of the trades and bulk retail end up.

Glenfield runs into Marlborough, Wairau Valley, Hillcrest and Bayview. It's not an exciting suburb. The locals will tell you so themselves, mostly with a small shrug. They will then mention the school zones, which is what they actually moved here for.
