Living in Days Bay
Days Bay is a small coastal village on Wellington Harbour's eastern shore, technically part of Eastbourne but distinct enough to have its own page in most property listings. It's where the ferry from central Wellington docks (the East by West service, 25 minutes from Queens Wharf), and where most weekend visitors begin and end their day-trip to the eastern bays.
The Days Bay wharf is the landmark: a long jetty out into the harbour, popular for jumping off, kayaking from, and watching the ferry come in. The Days Bay Pavilion, a late-Victorian wooden pleasure pavilion built around 1900, used to be the social heart of the resort until it burnt down in October 1952. The beach in front is sheltered and sandy.
Williams Park, just behind the beach, was donated to the public in 1914 and named after the Williams family who developed the original holiday resort. Wellesley College, a state-integrated boys' school in Days Bay since 1909, is one of the country's older prep schools.
A 15-minute coastal walk south takes you to Eastbourne village. Most homes are heritage holiday cottages on narrow lanes. The kind of place where the dogs know each other.
