Living in Eastbourne
Eastbourne is a seaside village on the eastern shore of Wellington Harbour, about 5 km south of central Lower Hutt. It's reached by the East by West ferry (25 minutes from Queens Wharf) or the road around the eastern bays, and is the sort of place Wellingtonians escape to when the city gets too much. Restaurants, art galleries, a heritage village strip on Rimu Street, and views straight across to the city.
The wider "Eastbourne" actually covers a string of small bays: Point Howard, Sorrento Bay, Whiorau/Lowry Bay, York Bay, Mahina Bay, Sunshine Bay, Days Bay, Rona Bay, Robinson Bay and Camp Bay. Most have a wharf, a beach and a short row of cottages.
The Italian heritage runs deep. Several Stromboli families settled around Rona Bay from 1892, establishing fishing and horticultural businesses, and the suburb still carries a distinctive Mediterranean influence in some of its older architecture. Eastbourne was its own borough until amalgamation into Lower Hutt.
Past the village, the coastal road heads south to Burdan's Gate. Beyond the gate, a pedestrian-only road runs out to the Pencarrow Lighthouses at the harbour entrance. Good walking, good cycling, no cars.
