Wainuiomata is the southern outpost of Lower Hutt, separated from the main Hutt valley by a hill range and reached by a single road (the Wainuiomata Hill Road) that locals call "the hill". It has around 20,000 residents and the energy of a place that's not on the way to anywhere else. If you're in Wainuiomata, you came specifically.

The suburb developed in the 1950s and 1960s, originally as a state housing area, and has grown into a self-contained township with its own shops, schools, marae, sports clubs and identity. Wainuiomata Mall on Queen Street is the local hub.

The big drawcard is Waiu Park: 55-plus kilometres of mountain bike singletrack through regenerating native bush above the town, free to use, maintained jointly by Hutt City Council and the Wainuiomata Trail Project. It's the best free MTB network in the lower North Island. Adjacent to it, the Wainuiomata Regional Park in the Catchpool Valley has bush walks, swimming holes and one of the better day-walk networks near Wellington.

Past Wainuiomata, Coast Road runs out to the Pencarrow coast: black sand, big surf, no facilities. A proper get-out-of-Wellington spot.
