Living in Edendale

Edendale is a Southland town on the Mataura River between Mataura and Invercargill, and it earns its place in the national conversation by housing one of New Zealand's largest dairy processing facilities: the Fonterra Edendale site processes a significant share of the country's milk supply, and the town around it runs at the rhythm that dairy farming and dairy processing impose, which is to say very early in the morning and without particular regard for weekends.

Around 800 people live in Edendale, in the housing that a company town and farming service settlement produces: practical, affordable and occupied by the processing workers, the farming families and the service providers that the industry requires. The town has the functional character of a place that knows its economic purpose and organises around it without pretension.

The Mataura River here is the trout fishing resource that the river carries through its entire length: the pools and runs near Edendale provide the access that the Gore-to-coast fishing community uses, and the flat Southland plain around the river gives the angler the open skies that make the fishing as much a landscape experience as a sport.

Edendale School covers the local primary years; secondary students travel to Gore or Invercargill depending on the family's direction.
