Fairfield is a small eastern suburb of Lower Hutt, sitting on the flat of the Hutt Valley between Epuni, Avalon and Naenae, around 5 km from the Lower Hutt city centre and about 18 km by road from Wellington. It is a quiet, settled residential area, so closely tied to its neighbours that its population is usually counted as part of Epuni East.

Like much of the eastern valley, Fairfield is largely a product of the mid-twentieth century, when the Hutt filled with family housing on the floodplain of Te Awa Kairangi, the Hutt River. The streets are flat and walkable, and the river and its trail are never far to the west, with the hills rising on the far bank. The Hutt River Trail, popular with cyclists and walkers, follows the stopbanks the length of the valley and is an easy stroll from most of the suburb.

Epuni School covers the primary years for local children, and the wider area is served by the Hutt's secondary schools, including Naenae College and Hutt Valley High School. Everyday shopping is handled in nearby Naenae and Avalon, or in the larger centre of Lower Hutt and its Queensgate mall a short drive away.
