Glen Eden is in West Auckland, about 14 km west of the CBD, sitting at the foothills of the Waitākere Ranges. The original name was Waikumete, after the stream that runs through it. The English name was adopted in 1921. Te Kawerau ā Maki are the mana whenua here.

The Western Line train station has been the heart of the place since 1880, and the village around it (Glenmall) is the main shopping strip. From the station you can walk Te Ara Hono path along the Waikumete Stream, into Ceramco Park (Ōkaurirahi), all the way to Kaurilands Domain. Ceramco Park itself is built on a former clay quarry and brick-making site, which is also where the suburb's first industries took off.

Hoani Waititi Marae, on the southwestern edge of Glen Eden, is one of Auckland's pan-tribal urban marae and a hub for Māori cultural life across West Auckland.

The other notable place is Waikumete Cemetery, which sounds grim but is genuinely worth a wander. It's the second largest cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere, with 43.9 hectares of protected urban forest, including the largest gumland forest left in the area.
