Henderson is the unofficial capital of West Auckland, and locals will tell you that with some pride. About 13 km west of the CBD, it sits between the Waitākere Ranges and Te Atatū Peninsula, with Te Wai-o-Pareira (Henderson Creek) winding through it. The whole area grew up around Thomas Henderson's timber mill in the 1840s, then became a winemaking hub when the Lebanese-NZ Corban family planted a vineyard in 1907. Corban Estate Arts Centre is that old winery now turned into a cultural venue.

The town centre is anchored by WestCity Mall and Henderson station, which everyone calls Baby Britomart because of the rail-and-bus interchange. West Wave pool, built for the 1990 Commonwealth Games, is still where most West Auckland kids learn to swim. The Trusts Stadium pulls in concerts and sport all year, and the Henderson Saturday markets are a proper buzz with fresh produce and food stalls.
