Glendowie is a leafy eastern Auckland suburb on the western shore of the Tāmaki Estuary, around 8 km southeast of the city centre. It bordered St Heliers to the west and Kohimarama to the south, and forms one of the so-called Eastern Bays along Tāmaki Drive. It is a settled, family-heavy area built mostly on quiet residential streets running down to the water.
Much of the suburb's character comes from the estuary itself. Karaka Bay sits at its southern edge with a small beach, and the West Tamaki Esplanade walkway follows the foreshore north through Glendowie. The streets are mainly low-density, with a mix of mid-century brick-and-tile homes and newer, larger builds replacing them in recent years.
Glendowie College serves the local secondary years and has long been one of the better-regarded state schools in the east. The Churchill Park area, with its broad reserve and farm, sits in the middle of the suburb and gives it an unusually rural feel for somewhere this close to the central city. Everyday shopping is handled at St Heliers village or further along Tāmaki Drive.
