That makes it one of Auckland's oldest planned European towns.

The standout local attraction is Howick Historical Village: a 7-hectare living museum on Bells Road with around 30 original or replica colonial buildings, costumed staff on Live Days and one of the country's better hands-on heritage experiences. It's been running since 1980.

Picton Street is the heart of the suburb (Howick locals just call it "the village"), with a long line of cafés, restaurants, the Howick Information Centre and Stockade Hill Park just up the rise. Stockade Hill itself is the original 1847 fortified site, now a park with sweeping views back to the city.

Howick Beach below the village is sheltered, family-friendly and busy on warm weekends. The wider area includes Cockle Bay, Mellons Bay, Bucklands Beach and Eastern Beach. Pakuranga is next door with the Lloyd Elsmore Park complex. Rangitoto and Browns Island are visible from most high points.
