The beach is the suburb's centre of life. Kohimarama Beach runs in a gentle arc with a boardwalk and grassed reserve along the back, the kind of waterfront that fills up the moment summer arrives. Behind the beach, the streets climb gently into the suburb's older volcanic ridges, with a mix of inter-war villas, mid-century homes and newer apartments closer to the foreshore.
Selwyn College sits in Kohimarama and is the local state secondary, opened in 1956 to serve the postwar growth of the Eastern Bays and now educating around 1,600 students.
