Massey was named after Prime Minister William Ferguson Massey in 1915. Before that it was Lawsonville, a sparse spread of orchards, gum-diggers' camps and patchy farms. The most colourful figure of the early days was Don Buck, a Portuguese immigrant who ran a gum-digging camp employing ex-prisoners through the 1890s and early 1900s. There's a Don Buck Road and Don Buck Primary School to remember him by.

Modern Massey only really took off after the Northwestern Motorway was extended through in the late 1950s. Three distinct areas grew up: Massey East (Royal Heights), Massey West, and Massey North, which is now Westgate and the NorthWest Mall precinct.

Te Manawa community centre and library opened in 2019 to give the suburb a proper civic heart. Massey High School (1969) is one of West Auckland's largest. Massey rugby club has produced internationals including the Pisi brothers. Jonah Lomu signed there once, before injury kept him off the field.
