Mount Eden is named after Maungawhau, the 196-metre volcanic cone at its centre - the highest natural point on the Auckland isthmus. The maunga is sacred to mana whenua and was once the largest pā in the country, with terraced fortifications still visible if you know where to look.

Most people know Mount Eden for three things, in roughly this order: the volcano, the village, and the prison. Mount Eden Prison closed as a working prison in 2011 and the 1882 sandstone building remains a Category 1 historic place near the train station. The volcano is free to walk up from Mount Eden Road, with sweeping 360-degree views of Auckland. Vehicles haven't been allowed to drive to the summit since 2011 (a decision made to protect the maunga), and the walk is much nicer for it.

Mount Eden Village along Mount Eden Road is the food and shopping hub: cafés, bakeries, the War Memorial Hall, a few good restaurants, and the kind of independent retail that Auckland keeps trying to flatten with apartments. The eastern half of the suburb sits inside the Double Grammar Zone, which keeps property prices doing what they do.

Eden Park is technically just over the boundary in Kingsland. Locals will quietly correct you on this.
