Three Kings sits on the central Auckland isthmus, around 8 km south of the CBD, named after the three volcanic cones that used to dominate it. Note the past tense. Two of the three were quarried into oblivion for road metal in the early 20th century - one of Auckland's more uncomfortable bits of urban history that nobody's quite figured out how to commemorate properly.

The remaining maunga, Te Tātua-a-Riukiuta, still rises above the suburb on Mount Eden Road. The Big King quarry, now a half-flooded pit at the foot of the cone, is the visible reminder of what happened to the other two.

Three Kings is a mixed suburb in just about every sense. Three Kings Plaza on Mount Eden Road has the local Pak'nSave, the medical centre, takeaways and the standard suburban retail. Stoddard Road on the western edge runs into the industrial Mount Roskill end. The residential streets behind the maunga are quieter villa territory.

St Cuthbert's College, one of Auckland's leading private girls' schools, sits at the eastern edge. The contrast with the more modest residential streets on the other side of Mount Eden Road is the kind of urban juxtaposition that makes Auckland Auckland.
