Northcross is a small suburb at the northern end of Auckland's North Shore, part of the string of East Coast Bays suburbs and sitting just inland between Albany and Browns Bay, about 20 km north of the city centre. It is a compact, almost entirely residential area on what was farmland until the suburbs reached this far north.
For such a small suburb, it carries an outsized name in North Shore education. Northcross Intermediate, opened in 1970, is one of the largest intermediate schools in the country, with well over a thousand Year 7 and 8 students drawn from across the bays. Its park-like grounds look out towards Rangitoto and the Hauraki Gulf. Sherwood School, sharing the site across the playing fields, covers the primary years.
There is no shopping centre to speak of within Northcross itself. Albany and its mega-centre are minutes away to the west, and the beaches and shops of Browns Bay are an easy run east. The Northern Motorway and the busway at Albany put the central city within half an hour.
It is really a school and a set of streets around it, and for families chasing the zone, that is the entire draw.
