Living in Torbay
Torbay is the second-to-last of Auckland's East Coast Bays, around 25 km north of the CBD, and the point on the North Shore where the city starts to feel like it's running out, in the best possible way. Around 8,500 people live here, on streets that drop toward two beaches: Torbay's own small sandy bay, and Waiake Beach with its sheltered swimming and the Tor, the rocky outcrop kids have been daring each other off for generations.
The village is compact and properly local: a handful of cafes, takeaways, the dairy, and a Saturday morning crowd in active wear discussing house prices at a volume that suggests they think it's a private conversation.
The suburb's trump card is next door. Long Bay Regional Park, one of Auckland's most visited, starts at Torbay's northern edge, with its long beach, clifftop walks and pōhutukawa-shaded lawns absorbing thousands of summer picnics. Torbay locals treat it as the back garden, which technically it is.
Torbay School and Glamorgan School split the primary years, with Long Bay College handling secondary. The bus to the city takes a while, and the locals consider it a reasonable tax on living somewhere this good. One swim at Waiake and your mate will agree.
