Living in Panmure

Panmure is an east Auckland suburb about 11 km southeast of the city centre, on the western bank of the Tāmaki River and wrapped around the northern shore of the Panmure Basin. It is one of Auckland's older settlements, founded in the 1840s as a fencible village of retired British soldiers guarding the southern approaches to the young town.

The Panmure Basin is the suburb's natural centrepiece, a near-circular tidal lagoon that fills an old volcanic explosion crater, ringed by a popular walkway that locals use for a loop on foot or by bike. The Tāmaki River and its estuary edge the suburb to the east, crossed since the 1860s by the bridges that first connected this side of the city.

Panmure has long been a transport hub. Its rail station, rebuilt in 2007 as a modern bus and train interchange, sits on the eastern line and anchors the busway south towards Botany. The town centre carries a busy, diverse stretch of shops and eateries, and the wider area is in the middle of major regeneration and new housing.

It is a working corner of the city with a long memory, changing fast while the basin stays exactly as it was.
