Mount Wellington (Maungarei in te reo, "the watchful mountain") is in central-southeast Auckland, about 11 km southeast of the CBD. The suburb wraps around the volcano of the same name: 135 metres high, the largest scoria cone in Auckland, and the youngest onshore volcano in the field, formed only about 10,000 years ago.

You can walk to the summit in 10 minutes from Mountain Road. The views are different from Mount Eden or One Tree Hill: more industrial, more harbour, more Tāmaki estuary. There's a water reservoir in one of the craters since 1963, and a rugby pitch up there too. Ownership of the maunga was returned to mana whenua via the Tūpuna Maunga Authority in 2014.

The other big anchor is Sylvia Park: New Zealand's largest shopping mall, opened in 2006, with 250+ stores, a Hoyts cinema, and as of December 2025, the country's first IKEA. The mall has its own train station on the Eastern Line. Locals shorthand the area around it as "Sylvia" rather than Mount Wellington.
