Living in Stonefields
Stonefields is one of Auckland's strangest and most successful addresses: an entire suburb built inside a hole. The old Mt Wellington quarry, gouged out of the lava flows below Maungarei over a century, was master-planned from around 2010 into a complete community, and around 7,000 people now live where the basalt used to, about 10 km southeast of the CBD.
The geography makes it instantly legible. The quarry walls rise around the suburb like a natural amphitheatre, the streets run in tidy modern grids across the old pit floor, and the housing is uniformly new: terraces, apartments and compact standalone homes with the build dates of a suburb that has never known a draughty villa.
The Stonefields Heritage Trail climbs the rim, telling the quarry story on the way to views across the basin, with Maungarei itself rising directly above for the bigger climb. Down on the floor, the parks, wetland and playgrounds were planned before the people, and it shows in the best way.
Stonefields School was built new for the suburb, with Selwyn College taking most of the secondary years and the Lunn Avenue retail strip handling the shopping next door. Glen Innes station is minutes away for the train. Your mate's first question will be about the cliffs. Everyone's is.
