It's been a working part of West Auckland since the 1840s, when settlers cleared kauri and set up brickyards along the clay deposits.

Two things make Avondale famous. First: the Avondale Sunday Market at the racecourse. New Zealand's biggest one-day market and the longest-running. 6am to noon every Sunday, rain or shine. The serious shoppers arrive at dawn for produce and ingredients you can't easily find elsewhere - Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Pacific. Up to 20,000 people pass through.

Second: the Hollywood Avondale, New Zealand's longest-running cinema, in the old Avondale Town Hall (1924). Still showing films, live gigs and community events.

Quick claims to fame: Hayward Wright developed the Hayward kiwifruit cultivar in Avondale in the early 1900s. The Avondale Spider (Delena cancerides), a harmless huntsman from Australia, lives here and almost nowhere else in New Zealand. Locals adopted it as the unofficial mascot and ran a "Save Dale" campaign to keep a statue of one in town.
