Living in Te Atatū Peninsula
Te Atatu Peninsula pushes north into the Waitemata Harbour from the Northwestern Motorway, around 10 km west of the Auckland CBD. The name Te Atatu translates as "the dawn", and the peninsula does get the morning light across the water toward the city, which is the kind of detail real estate photographers have noticed.
The suburb was built mostly in the 1960s and 70s as classic weatherboard-and-brick family territory, and held onto a slightly separate, end-of-the-road identity because it literally is the end of the road: one way in, one way out, water on three sides. Around 14,000 people live here. Townhouse infill has been steadily arriving since the Unitary Plan.
Harbourview-Orangihina Park runs along the eastern shoreline, with wetland paths and the best free view of the city skyline in West Auckland. The town centre on Te Atatu Road has the library and community centre, a supermarket and a steadily improving run of cafes.
Rutherford College handles the secondary catchment, with several primaries feeding it. The Northwestern Cycleway connects across the causeway to the city in around 35 minutes of pedalling. The peninsula's pitch is simple: water, light, and a commute that's either terrible by car or great by bike. Choose accordingly.
