Living in West Harbour

West Harbour sits on the upper Waitemata Harbour in northwest Auckland, around 16 km from the CBD, between Massey and Hobsonville. It was built mostly through the 1980s and 90s as the marina suburb of the northwest, and the marina remains the headline: Westpark Marina is one of Auckland's larger boat harbours, home to several hundred berths and the steady weekend ritual of boats going out optimistic and coming back quiet.

Around 10,000 people live here, on streets that roll down toward the water, with a decent share of homes claiming some version of a harbour view. The housing is solid 80s and 90s suburban stock, larger than the new terraces going up next door in Hobsonville, which keeps West Harbour popular with families wanting a garage and a garden rather than a balcony.

Luckens Reserve runs along part of the coastline with walking tracks and picnic spots. A commuter ferry runs from the marina to downtown Auckland on weekdays, which is comfortably the best way to arrive at work in this part of the city.

Marina View School covers the primary years; most secondary students head to Massey High School. The NorthWest shopping centre at Westgate is 5 minutes away. West Harbour does exactly what the name says, and the residents wouldn't change a thing.
